Protection
from Cold Weather
When temperatures drop and snow
falls, we all can use some good tips on protecting ourselves and
our family from the cold. Niru Prasad, MD, on staff at St. Joseph
Mercy Community Healthcare System has these suggestions:
Dress in light, loose, layered
clothing. Air is a good insulator, so loose layers will keep
you warmer than tight fitting, bulky garments.
Avoid alcohol. It constricts
blood vessels and makes it harder for blood to circulate,
depressing brain activity.
Know the medications you are
taking and their side effects. If you are taking medication
for high blood pressure or a thyroid condition, ask your
doctor about using these drugs during extreme cold weather.
The dosages may need adjustment.
Eat well-balanced meals and carry
extra food supplies and extra blankets if you are planning
long car trips.
